You Bought the Trees, and Now One of Them Is a Stump

People move to Deep Wood Drive and Knollwood Court for the canopy. The whole point of a heavily wooded acre-plus lot is that you are living inside the woods rather than beside them. Which makes taking one tree out feel different than it does on a bare lot in a subdivision.

The stump that is bothering you is usually one of two kinds. Either a mature hardwood came down in a storm and left a hip-high trunk in the middle of the only open patch you have, or a tree died standing, got dropped for safety, and now there is a big pale disc in the middle of a lawn you have spent years getting to grow in shade.

And the thing you actually worry about is not the stump. It is whether getting a machine to it costs you the roots of the three trees you are keeping.

Working Around the Trees You Are Keeping

The names on these streets are accurate. Threading a grinder between standing trunks is the recurring problem here, and it has two parts: fitting through, and not doing damage on the way.

Fitting through is the easy half. The narrow machine gets between trees a wheelbarrow route would allow, and we will take the longer way round rather than force a gap. The half people do not think about is compaction. Rolling weight repeatedly over the root zone of a mature white oak — roughly the area under its canopy — is one of the surer ways to put it into decline over the following few years.

So we vary the line in and out rather than running the same track a dozen times, and we stay off the drip line of anything you care about when there is an alternative. On a wooded lot, protecting what stands is as much of the job as removing what does not.

Spring Hollow Is Named For What It Does

There are seeps through this ground that keep the low spots damp well into a dry summer, which is a different situation from a yard that is simply wet after rain. A seep does not dry out because the week has been hot.

When a stump sits in one of those pockets, the shavings come out wet and heavy, the fill settles more than usual, and the ground will take a track impression that stays. We handle it by working off matting, by keeping the machine on the firm side and reaching in, and occasionally by telling you the honest thing: that particular stump will be a better job in September than in March.

It also affects what you do afterward. Filling a wet hollow with wood shavings gives you a spot that stays soft and sour. In those places we prefer to haul the grindings out and bring in soil instead.

What Big Hardwood Actually Costs

The wood out here is the real thing: white oak, tulip poplar, shagbark hickory, beech in the hollows, sassafras and cedar along the older lines. That means honest pricing rather than a subdivision rate.

A large mature hardwood stump generally runs $350 to $700, driven by the spread at the base and the walk in rather than by the height of what is left. Hickory is the slowest of the group and hardest on teeth; poplar is the fastest by a wide margin; oak sits in between but has the widest base of the three. A mid-size stump on an easier part of the lot lands in the $175 to $350 range.

Where acreage pays off is in volume. Storms rarely take one tree out here. Three or four stumps handled on a single visit come in materially cheaper per stump than the same work spread across three trips.
