Nobody Sees It But You

The stumps we get called for on Langbrae Drive and Walnut Court are almost never at the mailbox. They are back where the mowed part of the property meets the woods, or beside the cabin, or in the middle of the one flat spot on five acres that you actually use for something. There is no HOA letter coming and no neighbor complaining. It is your own patience that runs out.

Usually the trigger is a plan. You want to put a pole barn on that flat ground, or run a fence, or finally get the bush hog through without lifting the deck every lap. A big hardwood stump sitting in the middle of a five-acre tract is not urgent right up until the moment it is the only thing standing between you and the next project.

The Walk Is Most of the Job

A typical Langbrae stump sits two hundred to four hundred feet back from the road, up a gravel drive that ends at a house rather than a loop. That geometry decides everything. There is nowhere to swing a trailer, so the truck stays near the road or in a spot you point out, and the machine walks the rest of the way under its own power.

A self-propelled tracked grinder covers that distance at a walking pace, which sounds trivial and is not: it is ten or fifteen minutes each direction before a single tooth turns, and it happens again if we have to go back for anything. So we plan one trip in. That is also why we ask for a photograph of the driveway along with the stump. The drive tells us more about the price than the trunk does.

If the last stretch is soft or steep, we would rather find that out from the picture than from the trailer.

This Is Big Hardwood, Not Builder Stock

The wooded tracts here grew what the ridge wanted to grow. Tulip poplar is the tall one, and it is a pleasant surprise on a grinder: light, wet wood that feeds fast and throws a lot of volume in a hurry. White oak is the opposite, dense enough that a thirty-inch base is an honest hour and a half of steady work, and shagbark hickory is worse again on cutting teeth than the oak beside it.

American beech shows up in the draws with a shallow, plate-like root spread and thin bark, and it tends to be wider under the sod than it looks standing. Black walnut is the one to tell us about in advance, because there is a fair chance of fence wire or an old nail buried in a tree that grew up along a property line.

Species changes the time on site more than diameter does, which is why we ask what it was before we quote it.

The Chips Stay On the Place

On a quarter-acre lot in town, hauling grindings away is often the only sane option. On five wooded acres it almost never is. You have somewhere for them, and moving them is the expensive half of the work.

Standard for us out here is to fill the void back to grade with the shavings, mound them a little because they will settle, and rake the excess out where you want it — around a tree line, over a bare spot on the drive, wherever you say. Hardwood grindings break down over a couple of seasons and make decent path cover in the meantime.
