A fence line changes the math entirely, because you're not paying for six separate setups - you're paying for one trailer trip, one grinder warm-up, and a run down the row that gets more efficient per stump the longer that row is.
We quote fence-line jobs with a per-stump discount built in once the count passes two or three, and the discount gets more noticeable as the line gets longer. Grinding eight small stumps in a row costs meaningfully less per stump than grinding eight scattered ones across separate properties on separate days would.
What Actually Drives the Number Up or Down
Species matters as much as count. A fence line strung with black locust - common on older Sumner and Robertson County farms because locust resists rot as a post - grinds slower and costs more per stump than the same length of hackberry, which is soft and quick by comparison. Diameter still counts too: a line mixing small volunteer cedar with a couple of genuinely old, thick trunks prices closer to the larger stumps' bracket, not an average of the whole row.
Ground condition plays a role we don't always get asked about upfront. A fence line running along dry, firm pasture is a straightforward drive-and-grind. The same line along a low spot that stays soft after rain can mean slower, more careful equipment movement, which adds time even though the stumps themselves aren't any different.
How to Get an Accurate Quote Without a Site Visit
The single best thing you can send us is a photo taken from one end of the fence line looking down its length, not a close-up of one stump. That shows us the count, the rough spacing, and often the general terrain in one image. Follow it up with a second photo of the ground leading in from the road or driveway, since that tells us whether a full-size trailer works or we need to walk equipment in partway.
Mention if you know the species too - if the fence line was part of an old cattle operation, there's a decent chance some of it is locust, and knowing that ahead of time lets us quote it accurately instead of adjusting once we're standing there.
Leave the Chips or Haul Them Off
A fence line of ground stumps produces a genuinely large volume of chips - people are consistently surprised by how much material comes off even a modest 12-inch stump once it's fully ground, and that multiplies fast across a row of eight or ten. Some property owners want it all spread as mulch along the same line where the fence used to run, which works well if you're planning to leave that strip natural. Others want it hauled off entirely, especially if the plan is to run a new fence or extend pasture right up to where the old line sat.
Either way, decide before the crew shows up rather than after - hauling adds to the invoice, and spreading takes extra time on-site that's worth planning for ahead of the visit.
